What is ABA ?

ABA therapy stands for Applied Behavior Analysis therapy. It’s a type of therapy based on the science of learning and behavior. ABA is most commonly used to help children and adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but it can also be applied in a variety of other contexts (like education, developmental disorders, or behavior modification in general).

ABA is recommended for Autism because it is an evidence-based therapy that helps children build communication, social, learning, and daily living skills while reducing challenging behaviors. It breaks skills into small steps, uses positive reinforcement, and is tailored to each child’s needs, making it highly effective in supporting long-term development and independence.

ABA therapy is most often for individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, though it can also help those with other developmental delays or behavior challenges. Eligibility usually depends on a clinical assessment and, for insurance coverage, often requires an Autism diagnosis.

During an ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) session, the therapist works one-on-one with your child using structured, evidence-based strategies to teach skills and reduce challenging behaviors. Each session is tailored to your child’s treatment plan and may include a mix of activities such as communication practice, play-based learning, daily living skills, and social interactions. The therapist often starts by building rapport and motivating the child with preferred items or activities. Skills are broken down into small, manageable steps, and positive reinforcement (like praise, toys, or activities) is used to encourage success. Data is collected throughout the session to track progress and guide future planning. Parents may be asked to observe, participate, or practice strategies as well. Sessions usually balance learning with breaks to keep the child engaged and positive, all while working toward the goals outlined in their individualized treatment plan.

During in-home ABA therapy, parents play an important role in supporting their child’s progress. The parent should first follow the guidance of the therapist, as every child’s program is unique. In many cases, parents are encouraged to observe quietly so the child can focus on the therapist. However, parents may also be asked to actively participate by learning and practicing strategies, reinforcing skills, or helping with generalization of behaviors outside of sessions. Parents should also communicate openly with the therapist about goals, concerns, and progress they notice in daily life. The most helpful thing a parent can do is to create a supportive, distraction-free environment for the session, remain consistent with the techniques recommended, and show encouragement and praise for their child’s efforts. This teamwork helps ensure therapy skills carry over into everyday routines.

Parent training in ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) is a collaborative process where therapists work directly with parents or caregivers to teach them how to support their child’s development and behavior outside of therapy sessions. It entails learning the principles of ABA, observing strategies in action, practicing skills with coaching, and receiving feedback to build confidence. Parent training often includes guidance on promoting communication, teaching daily living skills, encouraging positive behaviors, and effectively responding to challenging behaviors. It also helps parents learn how to set realistic goals, create consistency across environments, and generalize skills so the child can succeed at home, school, and in the community. The overall goal is to empower parents as partners in therapy so they can help their child make meaningful, lasting progress.

The Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) is an early intervention approach based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). It combines play-based and relationship-focused techniques to promote language, social, cognitive, and motor development in young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

While both ESDM and traditional ABA are rooted in behavioral science, ESDM:

  • Is developmental and relationship-based
  • Uses naturalistic, play-based interactions
  • Emphasizes joint attention and social reciprocity
  • Embeds teaching into daily routines and activities, rather than discrete trial training

 An ESDM session typically involves:

  • Natural play and social routines
  • Focused activities tailored to developmental goals
  • Embedded learning opportunities within play, snack time, and other daily routines
  • One-on-one with a behavior technician

Goals are tailored to the child’s developmental level and interests. Goals are based on the ESDM Curriculum Checklist, which assesses developmental skills in:

  • Communication
  • Social interaction
  • Cognition
  • Motor skills
  • Play
  • Self-care
